My idea for this blog is to learn and grow in the area of fitness and health. I hope to do some interviews, research, and share my experiences with new-to-me techniques in training and exercise.
A little background. I have always enjoyed exercise, yet have never been athletic. I was too shy to put myself out there and suck at something in front of an audience.
A few years ago I became a widow. A little over a year had gone by and I just couldn’t exercise like I had in the past. I followed a program on YouTube for 30 days, but it wasn’t a good fit for me. I tried my favorite site, Fitness Blender. But the familiar workouts just seemed to bring on memories and tears and I wasn’t seeing change or benefits. I needed something different. Something outside my living room.
I joined a gym where I had previously had a membership. But this time, I decided to do something I had never done: Sign up for personal training sessions.
At the initial meeting, the person I had the appointment with wasn’t there, so I met with someone else. It turned out to be a good thing. He was very patient with me. He asked several questions, which I answered candidly. Something about widowhood made me a little more open to vulnerability. At one point during the conversation, I heard someone speak. The voice sounded familiar. I began crying. The interviewer asked I wanted to stop or reschedule. I told him no, explaining I spontaneously cry sometimes. He actually seemed okay with that, and we carried on. I chose the smallest package available. I would have one 30-minute session every other week.
Before leaving that afternoon, he walked me around the gym and showed me a few areas, including the sled. That had been a dream of mine to push one, but that is a blog post for another day. After showing me around, we scheduled my first session and I left.
I walked out of there hopeful. I was nervous about the commitment. Though, I think the commitment is why I was hopeful.
That was a year and a half ago. Signing that agreement was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.
Until next time, remember to be Fit for FUN and fit for LIFE.
